Check out the eigenharp, a pretty neat usb controller that features a bunch of buttons, some touch strips, and a breath controller. Too bad it looks to only use proprietary software. But its still in alpha release so maybe they will open it up to some other more common software. Either way maybe those middle school oboe lessons weren't a complete waste.

Speaking piano

Some Austrians using computers and a real piano make analog synthesized speech. Basically they have an actuator over every key on a piano, and they figured out how to use a computer to control the set up such that a series of keys pressed together in certain ways creates speech. The voice kind of scares me, but the choice of a little boy would do that.

Disappointed with the Korg Nano's keyboard? Well Akai just released an answer called the LPK25 (ooooh yeah sexxy name scheme) additionally they have the LPD8 which features 8 pads and 8 knobs. Slightly bigger than the Nano, but still pretty small, these might have better performance. We won't know till reviews start hitting the world.

You might remember the spectacular cover of Hot Chip's Ready for the Floor that Jasmin posted like a year ago. Back then the video had a few hits and little boots had even fewer videos. Well whoever said this internet thing can't start a music career was wrong. After seeing some of her videos online a TV show in the UK brought her on to perform, now shes got a record out. And had an entire episode of Last Call with Carson Daly last night dedicated to her, apparently the UK media is calling her the savior of Pop music, basically shes destined to be a hit, and its hot when she says "tenori-on".

So does the cataBlog have what it takes to make stars? You should go buy some music and try.

No not that Otto. OTTO is a real time tangible interface for slicing up beats on the fly. Via USB and Max/MSP this touch sensitive disk allows you to move around in the sample, reverse and pause, there might be more but I cant tell. Check out the video and link for more info.

I honestly watch to see who the musical guest is and if they are playing with The Roots, and to fill the commercial breaks of Craig Ferguson. We all know that Michael Jackson was a beast. One of the tricks he had up his sleve was the smooth criminal move, when he and other dancers would lean past 45 degrees and not fall over. I remember as a kid trying and falling a few times, and watching the videos and looking for lines or some way they would hold them up. Then seeing it done live I couldn't believe it could be done in a concert. If you watch this video you can see a clue as to how its done if you watch the foot of the guy on the right (if you dont want to sit through the awesomeness fast forward to 3:50ish).

There are a lot of custom or really expensive tangible audio controllers that have been designed, but percussa has figured out how to work the kinks out of thier AudioCube enough to bring it to market. Nothing spectacular, but for $300 its limiting, although it does bridge that gap of having fun with toys and making music.

The Pacemaker is a pocket sized DJ system, through the touch pad you can do all the djing stuff you want, with 2 tracks, you can output to headphones and have a line out so you can do some proper beat matching. Check out this really neat project by Kutiman.

What they did is they made an entire album out of clips sourced from the youtube. Its a pretty neat visual of all these clips that singularly are pretty lame, but together they work well. I particularly like track 1, mostly because it features my boy purdie and a thermin solo by a man with a mullet. But they are all pretty good.
